Musical Offering#2
Musical Offering #2 (2022)
In 2018, I decided to start putting together another solo program of works that I would enjoy performing for an audience. Over time, the program became as follows:
Bach, J.S. (b.1685) - ‘Ricercare a 3', from "The Musical Offering" (1747)
Scarlatti, D. (b.1685) - Sonata, K.3 (1738)
Debussy, C. (b.1862) - Étude 7 pour les degrés chromatiques (1915)
Ligeti, G. (b.1923) - Etude No. 9, "Vertige" (1990)
Messiaen, O. (b.1908) - ‘Le rouge gorge' from "Petites esquisses d'oiseaux" (1985)
Tchaikovksy, P. (b.1840) - 'Song of the Lark' from Op. 39 (1877)
Poglietti, A. (b.1610) - 'Imitatione del medesimo Uccello' from Suite in D major 'Rossignolo' (1677)
Liszt, F. (b.1811) - Grandes études de Paganini S. 141, No. 3 'La campanella' (1850)
Shostakovich, D. (b.1906) - Orchestral Interlude from "Lady Macbeth of Mtsensk" Act 1, Scene 3 (1930)
Wagner, R. (b.1813) - Prelude to "Tristan and Isolde", an 'Unanswered Question' (1859) (arr. Larkin)
Bove, C. (b.1959) - 'Resonance', from "Four Miniatures" (2013)
Starosta, J. (b.1969) - Situs Inversus Improvisatore II (2022)
de Schlözer, P.? (b.1841-2?) - Etude in Ab Major, Op. 1, No. 2 (1875)
Kapustin, N. (b.1937) - Toccatina, Op. 36 (1983)
This time, the program is based around various themes, once again beginning with J.S.Bach's "Musical Offering". After that, I spend a couple of pieces exploring the idea of a "chromatic scale" before suddenly turning towards ornithology. As before, there are a number of modern works, including premieres.
Here is a short video of a few highlights:
